Personal growth is not much different than that of a tree. For both, growth starts in the heart. You can not see individuals’ personal growth from their exterior, any more than you can see a tree’s growth from its bark. As time passes what was once growth at the heart, moves outward, revealing itself as a new layer, a new facet of the individual. As layers come to the surface they begin to take less energy, less effort; this allows more energy to be concentrated at the heart to fuel continued growth. However, growth is not always constant. Periods of low energy and little to no growth can occur for many reasons. A lack of energy, a cooling of the heart. Environmental crisis, stress, fire, drought. Darkness. These rings are especially elusive to observe from the exterior, but for the individual represents a very clear record of darkness.

The triptych uses an innovative painting technique where the artist diluted acrylic paint with denatured alcoholic, applied it to the wood, and then lit it on fire to alter the chemistry of the paint to produce a muted, ashen version of the paint color.
